Basic Science
The Pancreas Center basic science research program is led by Gloria Su, PhD.
She and her team have been focused on pancreatic cancer for more than a decade specifically on two areas of study: molecular profiling and mouse modeling.
Currently, research efforts are focused on understanding the precancerous conditions IPMN/IPMC (intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm/carcinoma) and how its etiology differs from PanIN/PDA.
Since IPMN/IPMC and PanIN/PDA behave differently clinically, we hope to derive clinical relevance from better understanding and differentiating between their pathways to development.
The team has identified several new targets for human pancreatic cancer, most notably in identifying oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes instrumental to IPMN/IPMC.
The team has also genetically engineered two distinct mouse models.
One simulates the genetic and histological presentation of PanIN/PDA, and the other simulates IPMN/IPMC.
